Diving into Cartagena: colonial charms, culinary feasts, and Caribbean beaches

Updated: Feb 18

Embarking on an adventure to Cartagena, Colombia, was like stepping into a vibrant painting where every brushstroke tells a tale of history, culture, and sun-drenched beauty. This city, nestled on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, unfolds as a mesmerizing blend of old-world charm and beachside bliss, captivating me from the moment I arrived.

Wandering the timeless streets of the Walled City

My exploration began in the Walled City, Cartagena's historical heart, where the past lingers in the air like a whispered secret. The cobbled lanes, adorned with brightly colored balconies and majestic fortifications, transported me to another era. I meandered through plazas, each bustling with life, and indulged in local flavors like arepas, savoring the lively atmosphere of Plaza Santo Domingo, a true embodiment of the city's soul.

Savoring the flavors of Getsemaní

In Getsemaní, Cartagena's vibrant neighborhood, I discovered a culinary paradise where Afro-Caribbean flavors reign supreme. Here, the streets buzz with an infectious energy, a backdrop to the delicious adventure of tasting dishes such as coconut rice, ceviche, and mouthwatering fried fish. It's a place where music fills the air, and the vibrant café and bar scene invites you to sit, sip, and soak in the colorful culture.

Beach escapes and island adventures

No visit to Cartagena would be complete without basking in its famed beach life. Beyond the city's sandy shores, I ventured out to the Rosario Islands, where the Caribbean's signature crystal-clear waters and powdery white sands offered a serene escape from the urban excitement. Snorkeling among the coral reefs, I found a tranquil world teeming with life, a stark contrast to the bustling city streets.

Nights filled with salsa and scenic views

As evening took over, Cartagena's spirit only intensified. The city's nights are alive with the rhythm of salsa, echoing from the doorways of lively spots like Café Havana in Getsemaní. Immersing myself in the dance, the music, and the festive atmosphere was an unforgettable experience. For moments of quiet reflection, the rooftop bars across the city presented a perfect retreat, with cocktails in hand and a panorama of Cartagena lit by the moon and stars.

Insider's guide to Cartagena:

  • Hydration and sun protection: The sun here is relentless, making water and sunscreen essential companions.

  • Embrace bargaining: Engaging in a bit of friendly haggling is part of the local shopping experience, whether for taxis or souvenirs.

  • Cultural respect: Cartagena's rich tapestry is woven from diverse cultural threads. Embracing and respecting this diversity enriches the experience.

Cartagena captivated my heart and imagination, offering a journey through cobblestone streets lined with history, into the heart of vibrant neighborhoods, across idyllic beaches, and under the spell of its night-time allure. This city is a living mosaic of experiences, inviting exploration, adventure, and a deep dive into the essence of the Caribbean. Cartagena isn't just a destination; it's a vibrant celebration of life waiting to be discovered.
